Navigating the Holidays

Navigating the Holidays Dec 11, 2025 by Jacquie Marshall MSW RSW

The holiday season is often described as a time of joy, togetherness, and celebration. Everywhere we turn in December, we’re surrounded by lights, music, gatherings, and traditions. But for many people, this season can feel heavy, lonely, or overwhelming — and that’s okay.

Behind the smiles and festivities, many carry invisible burdens: grief and loss, financial stress, health challenges, difficult family dynamics, or the weight of expectations. These struggles exist year-round, but the holidays can magnify them. The pressure to embrace the “holiday magic” can sometimes feel impossible.

If this season is hard for you, please know you’re not alone. It’s okay to honor your feelings and care for yourself in the ways you need. Here are some gentle reminders that may help:

• Put yourself first: Focus on what matters most to you, not on meeting everyone else’s expectations.

• Respect your limits: Know your capacity and give yourself permission to say no.

• Stay mindful of finances: Keeping within your budget can ease stress and protect your peace of mind.

• Find connection: Volunteering or reaching out to others can bring a sense of community.

• Keep routines: Familiar patterns can provide comfort and stability.

• Reach out for support: Talking to someone you trust can make a difference.
